Ephemeral Moments

The most important things are not things, they are moments.

The ephemeral sand art of Vitor Raposo on Maria Luisa beach in southern Portugal is washed away by the tide within hours of each creation – if not first jumbled by beach walkers.

Portuguese people have been walking all over art for centuries. Streets, sidewalks, and praças (plazas) across Portugal are rivers of hand-cut limestone rocks cobbled into a wide variety of stunning patterns. Walking across the optical illusions of moving waves in Praça do Rossio is delightful but unsettling.

Portuguese contemporary artist Vitor Raposo, on the other hand, creates ephemeral art in damp sand on a small beach in the south of the country. Waiting for a full moon, the artist starts at dawn when the tide is lowest to have maximum time for his creations. After many hours to complete each work, the subsequent high tide will erase his creation.

Enjoy more images of this ephemeral art and read more about Raposo, who discovered his inner artist only a few years ago. More images at: https://www.facebook.com/vitor.raposo.376 and www.instagram.com/vitinha_rr

Our own lived moments are erased by time, tides, and memory. But they can also plant seeds that can become gardens of abundancein our hearts. May the garden in your own heart flourish in 2023. Tim and I wish you many beautiful moments of kindness, beauty, compassion, love, delight, respite, and wonder.

Visa Update: Our applications have languished in a black hole for over 120 days with no information from immigration services. We can return to our home in Alcobaça on January 24 on a limited tourist visa while we continue our wait. Our neighbors report that our veggie garden looks fabulous. That gives us joy.

Please use email or WhatsApp (old US phone number) to correspond with us. We love to hear from our friends and family.
