Finding Peace in the Dark

In dark times we must seek light and amplify good. Hug your friends. Make music. Laugh a lot. Walk in nature. Be silly. Be weird. Be fierce. Be generous. Be kind.

In that spirit, we want to share some photos from a recent walk. Below the photos, writer Kelly Hayes-Raitt offers a brief story from her life in Portugal to give you a chuckle. Laughter brings more light to the world. Keep laughing.

Lost in Translation

by Kelly Hayes-Raitt

When a lunch date texted that she was stuck in traffic, I decided to order a latte.  I summoned the waitress and asked for a galão (pronounced guhl-OWWW).

“Bacalau,” she noted as she wrote on her pad.

“Não, não,” I protested, not wanting to order the salted codfish that is one of Portugal’s staples.  “Um galão.”  I did my best to mimic the challenging Portuguese nasal sound.

“Bacalau?” she repeated, confused.

Now, I was confused.  I knew I was pronouncing the word correctly, as I used it several times a week without a problem.  “Uma bebida de café com leite,” I explained.  (“A coffee drink with milk.”)

She looked even more confused and disappeared.

Imagine my delight when she returned a few moments later with a steaming cup of frothy espresso!  Turns out, the new waitress is from Brazil, where a latte is called a média.  We were all “lost in translation”!
